Many years ago, it was found that pulmonary rehabilitation is the most effective form of treatment for COPD and many other pulmonary diseases. Watch this series of six videos filmed in 1994 to hear from pioneers in the field of pulmonary rehabilitation: Thomas L. Petty, MD; Richard Casaburi, PhD, MD; Mary Burns, RN, BS; Brenda Crowe, CRTT; Julie Messa, MS; and Karen M. Kelly, MD, and to learn about how pulmonary rehabilitation has helped patients around the world.

Some things have improved since these videos were filmed, including smaller oxygen systems, better inhalers, and scientifically validated proof of the value of exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation, which can produce minor miracles in the lives of those who experience it, both teacher and patient.

The Pulmonary Education and Research Foundation (PERF) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that was formed from a passion to improve the outlook for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), through research into pulmonary rehabilitation and other patient-centered therapies. Over time, this purpose has adapted to include other diseases where shortness-of-breath and exercise intolerance are hallmark symptoms.

PERF publishes a free blog, and responds to reader’s questions and concerns, for those who experience breathing difficulties or exercise limitations.
