03 Dec How to Prevent “Truth Decay”

PERF needs your help. The world as we know it is under attack. We are not talking Martians… or even about the COVID pandemic. We are referring to the blurred lines between fact and fiction. Truth and falsehood. How do we, as a society, combat this uncertainty? We support and act on scientific discovery to provide the information to guide our actions.
PERF’s mission is to improve the lives of those who experience breathing difficulties, through the support of research and education. One way in which we meet this mission is by supporting scientific research focusing on practical solutions that, in the short term, bring benefits to patients with respiratory symptoms.
This part of our mission has taken on a special significance during the COVID pandemic. We support scientists and physicians working on the front lines to fight COVID. Examples of research being conducted by PERF-supported researchers right now (such as those in the photograph) include:
- Testing of anti-inflammatory treatments to reduce the impact of COVID
- Development of COVID sensors suitable for self-testing in the home
- Validation of respiratory filters used during lung function and exercise testing to mitigate COVID spread
- Characterizing the immune system benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with lung disease
We’re proud that we have reached record numbers of you with our COVID-19 blogs. Our website and blog are maintained, and your questions answered directly, by physicians, scientists, nurses, and patients, each of whom contributes their time for free.
