Pulmonary Hypertension – A Young Woman’s Disease

This interesting video produced by The American Health Journal talks about a life-threatening condition that affects mostly young women: pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Ronald J. Oudiz of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, an expert on the disease, discusses the curious nature of this condition that typically develops in young women around the age of 30, usually for reasons unknown. The ratio of women to men who develop pulmonary hypertension is 4 to 1, but luckily the incidence of the disease is rare: 1 to 2 people in a million, although those with autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma or lupus erythematosus are up to 10 times as likely to develop it. One young patient, Tiffany, talks about her disease and how it started with unexplained dyspnea (shortness of breath) and was initially misdiagnosed.  Click here or on the image below to watch – the segment on pulmonary hypertension starts at point 13:35 in the video.
